MASTERING adds sparkle and shine to your mix. Whereas Mixing is the "car wash", Mastering is applying that new coat of polish or wax.

Mastering is a process that is done to the whole song rather than just one instrument or track. Not only does it ensure that your songs will sound good on both regular and high end speakers (assuming your song is well mixed) it ensures that if you have a collection of songs, they flow smoothly into one another in terms of volume, and sonic quality. 

Mastering is the final step in audio production. This is what many artists need to do in order for their songs to be at Industry Level Volume (e.g. Radio) while still being well balanced in terms of stereo imaging and EQ. 

WHAT MASTERING ISN'T

Mastering is not a solution to a bad mix, as it will generally enhance the qualities within one. Therefore, a well balanced and great mix will sound fantastic once fully mastered. On the contrary, the flaws within a bad mix will be more evident after mastering in most cases, especially at the louder volume and clarity.
